Bursaries

UTMSU is committed to supporting UTM students experiencing financial barriers. We offer a variety of bursaries and funding opportunities throughout the academic year to help make university more accessible and reduce some of the financial pressures students may experience.

Funding amounts may vary depending on available funding, the number of applications received, and the number of students approved.

UTMSU Needs-Based Bursary

Fall applications open

The UTMSU Needs-Based Bursary provides additional financial assistance to UTM students experiencing financial need.

Applications are offered during three application periods throughout the academic year:

  • Fall Semester
  • Winter Semester
  • Summer Semester

Applications are only accepted during designated application periods and are not ongoing.

This bursary provides additional support and is not designed to cover full tuition costs or other major academic expenses.

Successful applicants will be contacted by email once applications have been reviewed.

UTMSU Transit Bursary

Fall applications open

The UTMSU Transit Bursary provides financial assistance to UTM students experiencing financial barriers related to transportation and commuting costs.

Applications are offered during three application periods throughout the academic year:

  • Fall Semester
  • Winter Semester
  • Summer Semester

Applications are only accepted during designated application periods and are not ongoing.

Funding amounts may vary depending on available funding and the number of eligible applicants.

UTMSU Emergency Academic Bursary

Ongoing

This bursary reimburses eligible academic expenses that students may have difficulty covering, such as textbooks and other eligible educational expenses.

Unlike the Needs-Based and Transit Bursaries, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Students should be prepared to provide required documentation or proof of purchase, along with a detailed written explanation of their financial situation and needs.

Childcare Bursary

The UTMSU Childcare Bursary provides additional financial support to UTM students with children.

Students who indicate that they have a child when completing the UTMSU Needs-Based Bursary application will automatically be considered for the Childcare Bursary.

A separate application is also available. It is optional for students who already indicated that they have a child through the Needs-Based Bursary application.

Other Financial Support

Students who require additional financial assistance may also explore funding opportunities available through the University of Toronto and UTM, including:

  • University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students (UTAPS)
  • UTM Student Affairs & Services
  • International Education Centre (IEC) for eligible international or global learning opportunities
  • Foster Children Bursary Program

These programs are administered separately from UTMSU and may have their own eligibility requirements, application processes, and deadlines.
