About This Campaign
In a 2020 survey, 75% of surveyed UTM students identified with a religious or spiritual group. Around 20% identified as Muslim, 22% as Christian, and smaller percentages as Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jewish, or members of other faiths.
UTM currently has only two multi-faith spaces in the CCT building and small reflection spaces in IB and MN. These spaces do not meet the needs of religious students. Despite continued campus expansion and a 12.6% increase in the on-campus student population since 2016, the university has not allocated adequate space to support spiritual well-being and accommodate diverse faiths.
Students have been forced to pray under staircases, in hallways, or leave campus altogether, raising concerns about safety, privacy, and accessibility.
UTMSU will continue to fight to
- Establish clear, policy-based standards for adequate faith and reflection spaces across campus
- Ensure multi-faith spaces accommodate all faiths through meaningful consultation with students and faith-based student groups
- Expand the capacity, accessibility, and availability of existing faith and reflection spaces as UTM grows
