Expanding access to bidets as an important hygiene, health, inclusion, and religious accommodation issue.
About This Campaign
Access to bidets is an important hygiene, health, and inclusion issue for many UTM students, particularly those whose religious practices require water for cleansing. Students have reported avoiding campus washrooms, carrying water bottles, or waiting until they get home, causing discomfort and disrupting their studies and religious practices.
UTMSU installed four bidets in the Student Centre as a pilot project. The response was overwhelmingly positive: over 98% of surveyed users said the bidets improved their well-being, and over 98% wanted additional bidets installed across campus. The pilot demonstrated that bidets are affordable, practical, and valued by students.
Most campus washrooms are controlled by the UTM administration. UTMSU is calling on the administration to expand access across campus.
We are calling on the administration to
- Install at least one bidet in high-traffic washrooms across major campus buildings
- Fund the proposed first phase of 28 bidets across Davis, the Instructional Building, CCT, Maanjiwe Nendamowinan, and the RAWC
- Prioritize cafeterias, libraries, prayer spaces, and change-room washrooms identified by students
- Include bidets in long-term capital projects, renovations, new developments, and student residences
